Philipp Erdin

Additional Info

  • Country: Zurich, Switzerland
  • Unique Notes: 24 bit 48kHz audio stems, Pro Tools and Logic session files
  • Musical Genres: Rock, Electronica, Pop, Acoustic
  • Favorite Equipment : I use a lot of different preamps all the time, from Neve to Avalon, Chandler or Great River a.s.o. and I really pick them for their sound. What I love about the Focusrite Red 7: it's a channelstrip which sounds really natural, but not boring, it does not sound too colored, but still has a character which suits a lot of signals. And I really love the compressor in it.

Biography

As a teenager, Phil turned his parents' cellar into a real recording studio. "A good friend of mine was working at STUDER, he brought a little 16 Channel Desk an a 8 track Revox half inch tape machine and some outboard gear, so we could record our demos", he says, "we spent every free minute down there and recorded almost every band in town. I still have some close friendships from that time. I also installed my first Pro Tools HD there, before moving to Zurich in 2003 to run one of the largest studios in Switzerland with two of my friends".

During that time, he made his living as a sound engineer in the reinforcement side of the business. He specialised in stage sound because a lot of acts just had F.O.H. -Engineers, Phil could operate the mixing desk for international acts like the Roots, Black Eyed Peas, Shaggy, Westlife and many more. however, his real fascination was in the studio work. Since 2003 he has been working in the Recording Studios 571 in Zurich, where Artists like Lenny Kravitz and Eminem spent a day or two to do some recording or rehearsal work while on tour in Europe.

"Of course local acts are the main part of our customers and our daily business, but from time to time we get in touch with international artists. At the end of the day there is only one aim: we want them to be happy and to return some day. No matter if it's tracking, arranging or mixdown, I want to make sure the customer is fully satisfied with the result.

My philosophy for mixing is that the sound should reflect the song in an aesthetic way. Music should not sound "mixed" in the first place, but as if it would have happened "just like that". It's a strange impression, but I try to hear the music through the mix, so the mix itself disappears. There can be huge amounts of FX if needed, but only to get the desired impression of the music in a compulsive way."

After 20 years of working in the music business, Phil is still as passionate about recording and mixing as in the early days and is still trying to learn something new every day. "This work is a very important part of my life".

Testimonials

Phillip Erdin was great to work with! He puts a lot of passion and dedication into every element of his creation. He didn't treat our project as just another one on the list... but he really put his soul into making it something very special in just the way we needed it! A producer with great energy and spirit!

I'm so glad to have worked with Philipp for my first album. I absolutely felt that my ideas and my vision were a priority but he gave so many invaluable inputs that I'm very happy with! I'm over the moon with the end result, and it was such a fun process. I really felt like everything I wanted for this project was made a reality!

Philipp Erdin is one of the most customer oriented mixing engineers I have ever worked with. With the approach to delight the customer, Philipp Erdin serves many genres of music and works in a very aim-oriented and efficient way - a pleasure to work with every time.
- Roger Hintermann

Our collabroration with Phil was very inspiring and salutary. In the creativ process from songwriting until Mixdown we worked hand in hand. We where pleased by Phil's commitment and his innovative thinking, but also by his straightforward and humorous type.
